Traffic
We all have a motorist in our head that loves speed. And we all have
a resident in our head that hates speed. Our approach helps people find
creative ways of juggling these contradictory parts of themselves.
We have not yet met a neighborhood campaigning for more traffic. So
here's a novel idea. What if everyone drove in each others neighborhoods
like they would like other people to drive in theirs? The
Pace Car promotes just such an outbreak of civility and civic obedience.
This ends the need for speed bumps because residents turn their cars
into mobile speed bumps (which automatically get out of the way of emergency
vehicles!)
But not only can residents calm traffic when they are driving. Street
Reclaiming allows you to slow traffic through your everyday activities.
Our research shows that over time residents have retreated from the
street. And each step of that retreat has been an open invitation for
traffic to go faster. Reverse that retreat process and traffic will
automatically go slower. Unlike traditional traffic calming, Street
Reclaiming is non-punitive on the motorist.
Street Reclaiming also contains new street design techniques that are
much cheaper than traditional traffic calming techniques that
can be implemented by residents and the city in partnership.
Happy traffic calming!
